I take subconsultant work: production, construction administration, code analysis, and serving as Architect of Record in states where a firm isn’t licensed — with the responsible control the licensing acts require. You keep the client and run the design.

Thirty years of it, and most of it happened before Duzan Architecture + Design existed. I spent those years inside other architecture firms and construction companies — designing restaurants in Hawaii, Nevada and California, running a tower renovation in San Francisco, managing school additions across Illinois, and rebuilding mechanical plants for national laboratories and VA hospitals. The four states I hold licenses in today are where I can seal drawings. They are not the limit of where I have worked, nor where I can go — as an NCARB certificate holder I can be licensed in any state a project takes me.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory — design-build lead on a $6 million closed-loop cooling system: 16-inch Aquatherm piping, two 150 HP pumps and two heat exchangers serving 96 computer racks for what was then the fastest supercomputer in the world. Published in Mission Critical. Sandia National Laboratories — three air handlers, two cooling towers and a 300-ton chiller ($2.3M). I came to architecture the long way around — through the field, not out of it.
I started drafting at twelve and building decks and homes in my teens. By the time I was licensed in 2013 I had already spent years as a contractor and construction manager, running work on supercomputing facilities, hospitals, high-rise towers and school campuses. That order of operations is unusual, and it is the reason my drawings tend to survive contact with a job site.
Early on I covered a region across northern and central Illinois working with school districts — from Griggsville to Bismarck, as far south as Hutsonville and north to Dwight. Master campus planning, new buildings, demolitions, additions, life safety reports and the work that came out of them. I have sat through a lot of board meetings and learned how to explain a code problem without alarming a room.
I founded Duzan Architecture + Design in 2017 because I thought the service could be better. Not the drawings — the service. Returning calls, giving people real numbers early, and being useful before there is a contract. The practice now holds licenses in four states and does everything from a ten-year safety survey to a seven-story apartment building.
I do not always have the answer immediately. But I will research it and come back with the right one.
